Broadly speaking, treatment interventions can be classified as either Therapy, Rehabilitation or Training and can be applied both preventatively and restoratively. In practice, elements of all three areas would form the basis of a holistic, personalised plan with considerable overlap between disciplines.

It is helpful to view Therapy, Rehabilitation and Training as:

Therapy = restoring fundamental function

Rehabilitation = restoring or developing optimal, holistic function

Training = the development and application of function

THERAPY

Therapy involves hands-on techniques to manipulate or mobilise joints and muscles in order to reduce restrictions in movement via improved joint range of motion, increased muscle function, reduced muscular tension, reduced swelling and inflammation and to assist the body in the management of pain. This can also include interventions such as heat and cold therapies, the use of taping and bracing and neuromuscular electrical stimulation techniques. Therapeutic interventions are often said to address the symptoms of your problem.

REHABILITATION

Rehabilitation involves the maintenance and restoration of optimal function of individual body parts and the cohesive, integrated function of the body as a whole system with a strong emphasis on the principles of physiology and biomechanics. Rehabilitation focuses on movement-based education to develop effective and efficient motion control, improved movement behaviours and a heightened sense of body awareness. Rehabilitation interventions are often said to address the root cause of your problem, playing a significant role in the prevention of injury and prevention of recurrence of previous issues.

Training

In addition to reinforcing the effects of Therapy and Rehabilitation, a training program is designed to develop and maintain good health and fitness by increasing movement skill proficiency, strength, coordination and endurance of all fundamental movement patterns and improve the performance of sport/activity specific skills. By extension of these benefits, an effective training program can improve balance and mobility, can help to improve body composition, resilience to illness and increase mental wellbeing.
